A deliciously moist chocolate espresso banana bread, perfect for brunch or cozying up at home, featuring rich cocoa and a gentle coffee kick.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • ½ tsp espresso powder
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 cup ripe bananas (mashed)
  • ½ cup dark chocolate chips + a few extra for the top
  • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips + a few extra for the top
  • 1 tbsp all purpose flour (for dusting chocolate chips)
  • ¼ banana (2 long thin slices off of a banana)
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, kosher salt, and espresso powder until evenly combined.
  2. Beat olive oil with both sugars, then add eggs, vanilla, sour cream, and mashed bananas until smooth.
  3. Fold the dry mix into the wet just until combined; toss chocolate chips with 1 tbsp flour and gently fold them in.
  4. Pour batter into a prepared loaf pan and top with extra chips and thin banana slices sprinkled with 1 tsp sugar before baking.

Notes

Use very ripe bananas for the best flavor. Dusting the chocolate chips helps keep them from sinking. Don’t overmix to keep the bread tender.
